After a drier-than-average late summer, autumn, winter and spring may be wetter than normal. Auckland could have a considerably wetter than average 2008 year overall, perhaps by 20%, with most months receiving above average rain. August may be the wettest month, especially in the second half, and February and the first halves of both March and April the driest periods.
Only one cyclonic event is expected in the summer/autumn cyclone season This should visit about 19th March, bringing bad weather about 18th-23rd to all parts of the NI.
Winter is likely to start earlier and finish later. April brings a sudden wintry cold snap in first week with first snow in the South Is.. Heavy rain should hit the North Is.about April 19th/20th. In May there may be a flood alert in the north for some areas between 3rd-11th and a cold snap brings more snow to ski slopes around May 22nd. Altogether a cooler winter is on the cards, with plenty of snow. In the S Is, a snow event each month will please skifield operators, but perhaps not road crews. June sees heavy rain affect the North Is. in the first week, with heavy rain and galeforce winds in the NI from Coromandel to Wellington, and down south another snow event should arrive on or about the 19th..In the first week of July 3rd most NI places may get rain, most ski slopes some snow, and rain coupled with higher tides may be heavy enough to again flood vulnerable flatlands. Between Aug 14th-17th: much rain may again affect the NI and on Aug 26th some of the heaviest falls of the year can be expected. About Sept 12th-17th, heavy rain in the west and also in far north could bring even more flooding. October is another wet month, and one bringing late season snow to skifields. From the last week of November through to the first ten days of December much rain should arrive in west Auckland but Xmas Day and Boxing Day next year should be fine and sunny.
Overall for year 2008, the country can look forward to more rain than average, with temperatures average to slightly warmer than average overall. Both islands may be slightly sunnier than normal with August the month for most cloud..
